Adult Workshops

KMVT Community Television in Mountain View offers rewarding, hands-on workshops in television and video production! No previous experience is necessary. Our workshops give you the skills to crew on an existing show, produce your own show at KMVT, or simply further your understanding of media production. KMVT Adult Workshops are for students ages 16+.

Payment can be made the first night of class. KMVT accepts Cash, Check, Visa or MasterCard. If you can not attend the class, please call KMVT at (650) 968-1540 to cancel. Classes may be subject to cancellation or rescheduling based on the number of participants registered.

Studio Production
Cost: $85.00
Enrollment Limit: 16

Interested in daytime group training let us know

Get hands on experience you need to safely operate the cameras, teleprompter, audio, switcher and character graphics. You will learn practical skills on how all the equipment works and functions during a production. You will also be required to work with your group and to do a "program piece" rotating crew positions. This class is required for anyone who would like to crew on a show produced at KMVT. Producer Training
Cost: $40.00
Enrollment Limit: 6
Prerequisite: Completion of Studio Production

Learn techniques of producing your own show. You will learn show structuring, review forms needed for shows, talent releases and how to work with your crew and copyright issues.

Director Workshop
Cost: $40.00
Enrollment limit: Min of 3
Prerequisite: Completion of Studio Production

Direct shows from a rundown in a live-to-tape setting and receive tips and feedback.
Participants will learn cues for starting and ending a show, how and when to insert graphics and VTR roll-ins, and how to better direct camera operators.
Hands-on portion will have students in the director role for show segments. Discussion will include group feedback and tips to improve.

Materials: Sheet of director cues, glossary, sample rundown, and DVD(s) of a program with director audio.

Adobe Premiere
Cost: $95.00

Learn the basic concepts of non linear editing by navigating menus, making cuts/dissolves, adding narration, music and transitions.

Remote Production Truck Workshop
Cost: $85.00/$45 if already taken studio production class

One three hour training and one four hour event

Learn EFP style production from set up to production to wrap up using the KMVT truck.
Students will learn how to assemble and where to place remote cameras, cable paths, and field audio. Class will include intro to control room and basic camera composition and shot assignments for sports. Second meeting will have participants rotating between camera and control room during actual coverage of (yet to be named) sporting event.

Field Equipment

Cost: $20.00 and must have a current KMVT Membership

Equipment rental requires completion of both Field Classes

Learn how to operate the Sony NX5U or PD170 cameras. These are the rental cameras that KMVT offers. This class is a hands on intro to operating video, audio and lighting equipment in the field. The class lasts 1 day and focuses on the operation of the equipment while on location. At the end of the class you will be tested and certified to rent the equipment available at KMVT.

Field Production

Cost: $55.00 and must have a current KMVT Membership and completion of Field Equipment

The KMVT Field Production class is a 1 day workshop covering video production outside of the studio. The class focuses on techniques, aesthetics, legal issues and common situations. This class will prepare you are the many situations that you are likely to encounter on location and how to deal with them.

Audio
Cost: $40

Learn the fundamentals of capturing sounds using different type’s microphones, and operating the audio mixer. You will also be introduced to the proper micing techniques’ and what it takes to create a professional audio mix for television. Proper care of audio equipment and cables is emphasized.

Intro to Photography
Cost: $45.00
Enrollment Limit: 12
Requirements – Bring your own Camera

This 1 day workshop will cover the operation and use of DSLR and Compact cameras. The class will show attendees how to make the best use of the shooting modes that each camera has and why each works the way it does. We will explore the concepts of focus, bokeh, flow and emotion of several photos. The second half of each class will specialize in a specific area of photography (Portrait, Landscape, Night and Macro photography). The class will end with a challenge that will put your new skills to the test.

Photo Walk

A KMVT staff member will meet any who wish to join at a location and time. The group will be lead through a few exercises before being encouraged to explore the area on their own. The monthly challenge will likely be a focal point of the event. TBA announced one month prior to class date.

Photoshop

This is a one day basic Photoshop class.  The class will focus on photo retouching. You will learn how to use the most popular tools and techniques for retouching photos. We will talk briefly about the uses and ethics of Photoshop in society and as a tool for art.

Intro to After Effects
Cost: $55

This is a 1 day class covering the basic use of Adobe After Effects. The class will discuss the different types of motion graphics and the concepts behind how they work. The class will cover the layout and workflow when using After Effects and get you started with key framing, layer types and masks.

Currently we offer short courses by arrangement in Video Editing, Field Camera, Video Blogging, and Uploading your Video to the Web! Please contact us at info@kmvt15.org to make arrangements for your one-on-one session.

Field Camera course
This training introduces you to our Sony PD-170 Digital Camcorder and other equipment needed in field production. In 1 hour, learn how to set up the camcorder and operate the portable equipment. In 3 hours, you will also learn some field shooting methods and techniques. This class is a pre-requisite for renting the PD-170.
Intro to Video Editing
Intro to Video Editing teaches you the basics of video editing through hands-on practice using our Adobe Premiere editing system. In 2 hours, learn basic editing concepts such as cutting, dissolving and adding music. In 3 hours, you'll also learn how to digitize video from tape, and edit with simple effects, music and titles. In 4-5 hours, you'll gain the knowledge to edit a simple project from start to finish, including how to export your final project to DVD.
Intro to Video Blogging
This is a hands-on introductory workshop about the exciting new world of video blogging; pod casting, and related graphics and web tools. You will survey and access existing video blogs while exploring basic camera, editing and publishing techniques for your personal video blogs. Although not required, it is suggested you bring your own laptop and existing video clips for exercises.
Uploading Videos to the Web
In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn how to upload your videos to the web. We’ll guide you step-by-step to create an account on Youtube and OurMedia, upload your video to these sites, and then briefly discuss how to integrate this into your own website or blog.
