PUBLICITY SERVICES FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

KMVT offers three forms of publicity for non-profit organizations: PSA stills on our Bulletin Board, text only Crawl and PSA Videos to be aired between shows.

A public service announcement (PSA) is a type of announcement featured on television, radio, print or other media. Whereas the objective of a standard advertisement is to market a product, a PSA is intended to benefit the public interest, by raising awareness of an issue, affecting public attitudes, and potentially stimulating action.

The station provides this service for non-profit organizations to promote events, services and raise awareness of issues. PSA's that meet our requirements will be reviewed before airing. Please limit your PSA submissions to one per subject.

KMVT Bulletin Board

The KMVT bulletin board is a series of still graphic images, similar to a slide show, which appears when there is no programming. The audio is music. There is also the “crawl”, consisting of scrolling messages across the bottom of the screen, similar to a stock ticker.

The bulletin board usually plays between midnight and noon on weekdays, and at varies times on weekends. Each bulletin board graphic image, or page, appears at least six times an hour; usually more often.

We will play broadcast ready graphic pages for non-profit organizations at no charge. A broadcast-ready page must meet these requirements:

1. *JPEG image, 4:3 Width to Height ratio
2. **At least 400 by 300 pixels. Larger is OK.
3. No pure white background. Light colors are best.
4. Fonts as large as possible. We suggest at least 35 point.
5. No bright red, bright yellow or bright orange. (These colors “bloom” on the screen.)

~ Printed flyers will not meet these requirements.
~ Files submitted as a word document, pdf or other will NOT be aired.

Creating your own graphic.

    1. Download this template: Photoshop Document, PSD
    2. Replace the text with your own.
    3. Save as a JPEG
    4. Attach the jpeg to an email
    5. Send the email to psa@kmvt15.org
    6. You should receive a response within a week.

Send your JPEG file or crawl message to psa@kmvt15.org. Be sure to specify the start and stop dates for airing and the city(Mountain View, Los Altos or Cupertino).

Crawl

The crawl is a single line of text that rolls across the screen. This is the simplest type of PSA and is free to non-profits. If you wish to submit a crawl please submit the text as a .txt file.

Tips

Keep it short. It can be hard for viewers to remember everything so only include the basics.

Fancy fonts won't help. All submissions are reformatted to a single font.

Example: "Fancy Pet Pants Walk. Put some pants on your pet and take them for a walk at Hill View Elementary. All proceeds go to pet adoption. Friday, October 12 from 1pm - 3pm. More information visit www.fancypetpants.fakeip"

PSA Video

Public Service Announcements are short videos that appear between shows while KMVT is broadcasting. The time interval between the end of a show and the beginning of the next will vary. Thus, the time slots available for PSA vary in duration. While there is no hard limit on PSA length, the shorter ones will fit in more time slots. The most popular PSA length is about 30 seconds.

PSA may be dated or undated. A dated PSA (example: an event announcement) stops showing on a particular date. An undated PSA, (example: energy conservation tips) has no specified end date. KMVT makes every effort to play dated PSA as often as will fit the available time slots. Undated PSA may play less frequently, but indefinitely.

We will play broadcast ready (no editing needed) commercial PSA's submitted on DVD, DV tape or digital mpeg2 files. The airing fee is $60. Non-profitss are FREE.

Digital files may be submitted through FTP, datadisk or in person at our studio. The file must comply with our systems digital playback requirements or we cannot play it. The file must be in the mpeg2 format, be 720 by 480 pixels and be less than 100 MB. We reserve the right to review, and, if necessary, refuse to air any PSA we deem unsuitable. In that case, we will refund your fee.

KMVT also offers PSA production services. Our simplest PSA consists of a person talking to a camera in the KMVT studio. There may be a generic-design “lower third” graphic along the bottom of the screen with, for example, contact information or an event date. We will produce and air such a PSA for your organization (using your spokesperson in front of the camera) for $150.

A more elaborate PSA may include custom “green screen” background design, custom lower third graphics design, field shooting, or other services. We offer these at $40/hour. Contact psa@kmvt15.org to arrange details.
